CHAPTER TEN

ROSLYN PUSHED MIA’S wheelchair into the patient pickup area outside the hospital entrance. Mia gripped the plastic Bay Water Medical bag on her lap and wished she’d taken a few extra minutes to dry her hair. The wet strands dampened the scrubs top Ava had loaned her to match her scrubs pants. Ava thought the scrubs would work better over her bandaged leg and arm, and she’d been right. Mia had already asked Ava if she could borrow another pair.

A silver extended-cab truck pulled up to the curb. Wyatt jumped out of the driver’s side, opened the passenger door and focused on Mia. “Your chariot awaits.”

Mia tried to ignore Wyatt in his jeans and casual T-shirt. The everyday wear for every man worldwide and yet she was never more aware of the man inside the clothes than she was now, with Wyatt. She tightened the strings on the worn scrubs, knotting her unwanted reaction to Wyatt deep inside her. She’d been discharged, but her mixed-up emotions about Wyatt hadn’t remained back in her hospital room. Still she was fine and didn’t need Wyatt. “I called a cab.”

“We weren’t putting you in a taxi.” Roslyn touched Mia’s shoulder as if to reassure Mia that she’d never fail her.

Wyatt shrugged. “Besides, my mom insisted I drive you, and you don’t want to upset her.”

Helen cared about her. Mia couldn’t disappoint the kind woman, could she? “You can just drop me off out front of the hotel.”

Roslyn settled Mia in the front seat and placed the Bay Water bag on Mia’s lap. Wyatt dropped the camera and laptop bags in the back seat. The aide made sure Mia was comfortable, gained Mia’s promise to visit, then sprinted inside. Mia clutched the plastic bag with her few personal items inside as if it was her only link to her favorite place in the world.

Wyatt tugged the plastic bag from her grip and set it on the back seat. “Everything okay?”

“For now.” Mia ran her fingers through her damp hair. Wyatt’s gaze sharpened, and her fingers tangled in the wet strands. “Did you plan this?” Now she sounded like they were something more. Like people who made plans together. Even her brain was scrambled.

“I told you I’d be checking up on you,” Wyatt said.

His one-sided smile suggested he knew he made her uncomfortable. No nurse or tech would interrupt them. They were alone together. Really alone. She tugged her fingers free, trying to release the snag from her throat, too. “Well, you can see I’m fine.”

Wyatt yanked on his seat belt. The buckle snapped into place with a soft click before he reached for her. He curled a wet strand of hair around his fingers and brushed his thumb across her damp cheek.

He’d done the same thing in Africa when she’d stepped out of the river exhausted and spent after too many days and nights at Eddy’s bedside, willing him to open his eyes. But Wyatt had used both hands, wrapping her hair around his fingers before tugging her closer and covering her mouth with his.
